At present, the port pilotage service depends on the Santander Port Authority, which is the one that grants the license with the conditions for the provision of the service (according to the Law of State Ports and the Merchant Navy of 2011 and the General Regulation of Pilotage of 1996). It is made up of six Pilots, Captains of the Spanish Merchant Navy, whose job is to advise Captains, to facilitate entry, exit and movement on board their ships, with the aim of guaranteeing the security of the port, port facilities , of the ship, of the environment and therefore of human life. In the Corporation of Pilots, in addition, up to a number of 20 workers work Port Skippers, Sailors, Administrative and other personnel.
