Capt. Lafi Al-Murtaji  - Team Leader Port Operations Kuwait Oil Company

Master Mariner and Maritime Professional with a diverse and extensive professional history founded on the underpinning practical Experience gained as a Team Leader in the Kuwait Oil Company.

Well-versed in all core aspects of Shipping & Maritime Industry, primarily Safety and Technical fields - having worked in Upstream Maritime operations, in Ports & Terminals.

Having served as a Master Mariner Officer on Oil and Gas Tankers left onboard sailing after over the years and joined KOC in 2002 as a Marine Pilot / Harbour Master / Port Captain/ Team Leader Port Operations. A specialist in the field of Marine Quality Assurance and Risk Assessment with extensive knowledge and Experience in Port Traffic Control, Vessel Operator Quality Assessment, shipping dynamics and logistics, Berthing / Unberthing, loading and discharging of vessels, hydrographic surveys projects in the sea area. 

Engage in a wide variety of activities such as overseeing port operations, effecting regulations, response to Oil Spills and other Marine Emergencies, recruitment & development of new joiners, port layout planning, conducting various marine studies, restructuring proposals, port dues and STS Operation, among others. Other qualifications include MICS and DPM (Diploma in Port Management), DPMI (Diploma in Maritime Inspection) as well as representing Kuwait Oil Company in IMO, OCIMF, IHMA & IAPH organizations.

Previously, the Pilotage activities at KOC were conducted safely, and the best practices were passed through practical guidance. However, after discovering ISPO, the entire Pilotage activities could be covered through integrated procedures and upgraded to a world-class standard. Having achieved the ISPO certification in 2014, the Pilotage unit has seen continuous improvement in its training procedures, safety performance and faith in the ISPO Standard over the years. 
KOC was the first to achieve certification in the Middle East-Asia-Africa region, which prompted me to seek the position as a Board Member of the ISPO organization and able to contribute towards the vision and strategy of ISPO, influence other ports in the region and make a difference in upgrading the safety, quality and environmental standard throughout this region.
